Changes Around Us: Physical and Chemical

The fire triangle

Dry wood in the open air does not burn. Enough heat makes it burn.

The idea

A fuel is a substance that burns.

Ignition temperature is the lowest temperature a substance needs to catch fire. Heat a fuel to this temperature and it catches fire.

A fire needs fuel, oxygen and heat. These make the fire triangle.
Step 1 of 4
  1. A fire needs fuel, oxygen and heat. These make the fire triangle.
  2. Take away the fuel. The fire goes out.
  3. Take away the oxygen. The fire goes out.
  4. Take away the heat. The fire goes out.

A fire needs three things: fuel, oxygen and enough heat. Take one away and the fire goes out.

A lid or a fire blanket stops air reaching the fire. Turning off a gas tap takes away the fuel. Water takes away heat.

Fire is not for children. Get out. Tell an adult at once. Call 101 for the fire service.

If your clothes catch fire, stop. Drop to the ground. Cover your face. Roll.

Water is not safe on an oil fire or an electrical fire.
