Operations with Integers

Sharing it out

A team has −12 after 4 rounds with equal losses. What was each round worth?

Start at −12.
Step 1 of 5
  1. Start at −12.
  2. Group 1: jump 3 towards zero.
  3. Group 2: jump 3 more.
  4. Group 3: jump 3 more.
  5. Group 4: jump 3 more. 4 groups of 3 reach 0.

Each round was worth −3 points. Dividing by a whole number means sharing into equal groups.

Rule: division follows the same sign rule as multiplying. Same signs give a positive answer. Different signs give a negative answer. Neither number may be 0 for these two rules. You cannot divide by 0. (−12) ÷ 4 asks: what number, taken four times, gives −12?

(−3) × 4 = −12, so (−12) ÷ 4 = −3. Each round cost 3 points.

Four shares, checked by multiplying back
ShareAnswerCheck
(−12) ÷ 4−3(−3) × 4 = −12
12 ÷ (−4)−3(−3) × (−4) = 12
(−12) ÷ (−4)33 × (−4) = −12
12 ÷ 433 × 4 = 12

Tap the answer in the lab. The check multiplies it back.
