Operations with Integers

Start here

The team starts at 0 points. It loses 3, then 4 more. What is its score now?

(−3) + (−4) = −7, walked on a line.

This is Part II, Chapter 2, Operations with Integers. Let's make it easy first.

What you will learn

In this track, a move is one walk along a number line.

  • Add two negatives. Both moves go the same way.
  • Add mixed signs. One move each way. The bigger move decides which side of 0 the answer is.
  • Take away, as an add. One rule instead of two.
  • Multiply and share. The same move, repeated or undone.
  • What zero does. Four jobs, and one it cannot do.
  • Where we use it. A thermometer, a lift, a score.
  • Zero pairs. Tokens (small counters) that cancel. Then you can take away any number.
  • Additive inverse. The partner that adds back to zero.
  • Many factors. Count the negatives to find the sign.
  • A bracket. Multiply each part, then add.

Every teaching lesson has a lab. Tap or slide. Watch what moves.

If you are unsure about negative numbers, revisit them first.
