How the Internet Works

What a web address says

A poster shows a web address. A slash (/) splits it in two parts. Why two parts?

cityschool.example/timetable
Step 1 of 3
  1. cityschool.example/timetable
  2. Before the slash: which computer.
  3. After the slash: which page.

An address has two parts because one computer holds many pages.

A web address is public on purpose. It tells a phone where to ask. It does not say where a person lives.

Rule: The part before the slash names the computer. The part after it names the page.

A dot (.) in a name is part of the name. Only the slash splits the address.

Real addresses often start with https://. Skip that part.

Read each address. Tap what the part names.
