How the Internet Works

More than one way through

A road is blocked. You still reach school by another road.

Two paths join You and School.
Step 1 of 3
  1. Two paths join You and School.
  2. One path is blocked.
  3. The message still arrives, by the other way.

A network is computers joined so they can send messages. A link is a join between two computers. A path is a chain of links. Two computers can often be joined by more than one path. So one cut does not always stop a message. A relay is a computer that passes a message on.

Rule: A message travels along a path of working links. If one path is cut, it uses another, if there is one.

Cut off the old computer. Keep School reachable.
