Patterns in Mathematics

Sequences that add the same amount

You save ₹5 every week. Week 1: ₹5. Week 2: ₹10. Week 3: ₹15. The same amount goes into your savings box each week.

Week 1: ₹5 saved.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Week 1: ₹5 saved.
  2. Week 2: ₹5 more. Total ₹10.
  3. Week 3: ₹5 more. Total ₹15.
  4. Same step every week: +5.

This kind of list is a sequence. Start at a number. Add the same amount, every time. That amount is called the step.

Change the step. You get a different sequence from the same start. Start at 5 with a step of 2 instead. That gives 5, 7, 9, 11, 13. Check: 5 + 2 = 7. 7 + 2 = 9. And so on.

Watch out!

2, 4, 8, 16 is not "add the same amount". Check the steps. 2 to 4 is +2, but 4 to 8 is +4. This one doubles each time instead.

Slide the start and the step in the lab. Watch the dots move.
