Patterns in Mathematics

A pattern is a rule

Beads lined up: circle, square, circle, square, circle. Next is a square. Now some numbers: 2, 4, 6. What comes next here? Numbers can have a pattern too.

Numbers 2, 4, 6 sit on a line.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Numbers 2, 4, 6 sit on a line.
  2. The jump from 2 to 4 is +2.
  3. The jump from 4 to 6 is +2 too.
  4. Same jump again. The next number is 8.

The next number is 8, because each jump is +2.

A pattern is a rule for what comes next. It can be in shapes, like beads. It can be in numbers too, like that list.

A rule can add, take away, or double. Know the rule, and you need not draw every bead.

Try it in the lab. Drag the new bead to the next number.
