Lines and Angles

Point, line, ray, line segment

A kite string, a ruler edge, a torch beam. Look at their ends.

Loading lab…

A point — one exact spot, no length at all.
Step 1 of 4
  1. A point — one exact spot, no length at all.
  2. A line — no fixed end. Arrows both ways.
  3. A ray — one fixed end, one open end.
  4. A line segment — two fixed ends.

The rule

Four shapes with different ends.

  • Point — one exact spot. No length.
  • Line — no end on either side. Arrows show it.
  • Ray — one fixed end (a dot), one open end (an arrow).
  • Line segment — two fixed ends. A ruler draws one.

Example

A torch beam starts at the torch and has no far end. The beam has one fixed end and one open end. So it is a ray.

A kite string is tied at both ends. The string has two fixed ends. So it is a line segment.
