Fractions

A fraction has its own spot

A water tank has marks from empty to full. The water stops on one mark. That mark has an exact place.

The rule

A number line shows numbers in order along a straight line.

A step runs from one whole number to the next. Cut each step into equal parts. Walk the parts from 0. Walk means move along the line, one part at a time.

Bottom number: how many parts in one step. Top number: how many parts to walk.

A line from 0 to 1.
Step 1 of 4
  1. A line from 0 to 1.
  2. Cut it into 5 equal parts.
  3. Walk 3 parts from 0.
  4. The marker sits on 3/5.

The line continues after 1. A top bigger than the bottom lies after 1. This kind of fraction is an improper fraction.

Example

7/4: each step has 4 parts. Walk 7 parts, each 1/4.

Four parts reach 1. 7 − 4 = 3 parts go after 1.

So 7/4 is 1 and 3/4. This is a mixed fraction: a whole number plus a fraction.
