Fractions

A roti can be torn into pieces. This chapter gives each equal piece a name.

4 equal parts. 1 shaded part is 1/4.

This is Chapter 7, Fractions, in your Class 6 book.

What you will learn

  • Equal parts. A piece has a fraction name when all parts match.
  • The two numbers. The bottom number tells the size of one part. The top number counts parts.
  • On the number line. Each fraction has its place, even after 1.
  • Many names, one amount. 1/2 and 4/8 name the same piece.
  • Comparing. Rename to one bottom number. Then compare the tops.
  • Adding and subtracting. Same-size parts add and subtract by their tops.
