Our Environment

Start here

A pond, a field, a forest. Each one follows the same few rules.

Eight ideas carry this whole chapter.

This is Chapter 13, Our Environment. It is the last chapter of your Science book.

What you will learn

  • An ecosystem, and its parts. Living things and non-living parts.
  • Producers, consumers and decomposers. Make food, eat food, feed on the dead.
  • Food chains and food webs. Who eats whom, and how chains cross.
  • Trophic levels. Each step in a food chain has a number.
  • The flow of energy. A small part passes to the next level.
  • Biological magnification. Some chemicals build up more at each level.
  • Ozone depletion. Depletion means thinning of the ozone layer, high up.
  • Managing garbage. Sorting waste that rots from waste that does not.

One rule before anything else

Every bench in this track is a simulation. It says so on its own panel. Nothing here asks you to handle real waste, chemicals, or fire. All the sorting, walking and switching happen on screen, with stated numbers.
