The work inside a job

A job is a list of tasks. A tailor shop has seven. Hemming is folding and sewing the edge of cloth. Pressing is ironing cloth flat.

No machine: 210 minutes of a person, 7 tasks.
Step 1 of 4
  1. No machine: 210 minutes of a person, 7 tasks.
  2. A machine can take four tasks: cut, stitch, hem, press.
  3. A person now only checks them. That is 58 minutes.
  4. A new task appears: care for the machine. Total 110 minutes, 8 tasks.

The rule

A machine can change the tasks in a job. Some shrink. Some stay. New ones can appear.

In this shop, measuring, billing and handing over stay the same. Billing is making the customer's bill. A person does these three tasks.

Cutting, stitching, hemming and pressing shrink. The machine does the work. A person checks it.

Care for the machine is a new task. It needs a new skill.

Add the minutes. Measuring takes 20, billing 10 and handing over 10. Together that is 40. Checking takes 58. Care for the machine takes 12. So 40 + 58 + 12 = 110.

Fewer minutes of a person can mean less work for some people. People who learn the new tasks can keep working. Not every person will find that easy. Real jobs differ from this made-up shop.

Give tasks to the machine, one at a time.
