I'm Up and Down, and Round and Round

Four names for four parts of a circle

A circle holds four named parts. A radius joins the centre to a point of the circle.

A circle, with its centre O.
Step 1 of 5
  1. A circle, with its centre O.
  2. A chord — a straight line, both ends on the circle.
  3. An arc — a piece of the ring itself, between two points.
  4. A segment — shut in by one chord and one arc.
  5. A sector — shut in by two radii and one arc.

The four words

A chord is a straight line joining two points of the circle. A diameter is a chord that passes through the centre. It is the longest chord there is.

An arc is a piece of the circle itself. It has two ends. Two points cut the circle into two arcs. The shorter one is the minor arc. The longer one is the major arc. A diameter cuts the circle into two arcs of equal size.

A segment is a region, a flat area. One chord and one arc shut it in. Shut in means closed on every side. Each chord makes two segments, one on each side.

A sector is a region. Two radii and one arc shut it in. It looks like a slice cut from the centre outwards.

Four parts, and the quickest way to spot each one
PartWhat it isHow to spot it
ChordA straight lineBoth ends on the circle.
ArcA piece of curvePart of the ring, between two points.
SegmentA regionOne chord and one arc around it.
SectorA regionTwo radii and one arc around it.

Try it. Name each coloured part.

  2. 1 Four names for four parts of a circle
  3. 2 The line from the centre that cuts a chord in half
  4. 3 Same distance, same length — and further out is shorter
  5. 4 An arc makes twice the angle at the centre that it makes at the edge
  6. 5 Every point on one arc sees the chord the same way

  11. 10 Three points give one circle, and the triangle shows where its centre is
  12. 11 Checkpoint: diameters, cyclic shapes and finding a centre
  13. 12 Many circles fit through two points
