Data Handling I: Organizing & Visualizing Data

Start here

A rain gauge is a tube that collects rain for measuring. It is read every morning. Seven numbers, one week. This time the program does the counting.

A week of readings, held in one list.

This track is Data Handling I: Organizing & Visualizing Data.

What you will do

  • A row of values. One list for the week. Count it.
  • Reaching one of them. Positions start at 0.
  • Building it up. A list the program fills as it runs.
  • Adding them all up. One box, one line, one loop.
  • The mean in code. Total divided by count.
  • Biggest and smallest. One walk through the list. Nothing is put in order.
  • Counting into groups. A tally, with a row for an empty group.
  • Drawing it from the list. Bars from the program's own numbers.

Need a quick recap?

  • Rows and columns — one record per row, one field per column.
  • The tally — one mark per answer, one count per group.
  • The mean — the total shared equally between the days, worked by hand.
  • A value that comes back — a function with return at the end.
