Pressure, Winds, Storms, and Cyclones

A breeze that turns around

On a beach at noon, the wind comes from the sea. At night it comes from the land.

By day, land is warmer than the sea. Wind blows to the land.
Step 1 of 2
  1. By day, land is warmer than the sea. Wind blows to the land.
  2. By night, the sea is warmer than the land. Wind blows to the sea.

New words

  • Sea breeze — wind from the sea to the land, by day.
  • Land breeze — wind from the land to the sea, by night.

The rule

By day, land is warmer. Wind blows from the sea to the land. This is a sea breeze. By night, the sea is warmer. Wind blows from the land to the sea. This is a land breeze.

Land heats up faster than water. So land is warmer by day. Land also cools faster. So the sea is warmer by night.

Ask which way the wind blows.
