Our Home: Earth, a Unique Life Sustaining Planet

Looking after Earth

Carbon dioxide is a gas in air. Plankton are tiny living things that float in the sea. Trees, plants and ocean plankton take in carbon dioxide. What if we add more?

Plants and oceans take in carbon dioxide.
Step 1 of 3
  1. Plants and oceans take in carbon dioxide.
  2. Burning fuel adds extra carbon dioxide.
  3. The extra traps heat. The planet warms.

The rule

More carbon dioxide in the air means more trapped heat.

Fossil fuels are coal, oil and gas. Climate change is a long-term change in temperature, rain and weather.

Burning fossil fuels adds carbon dioxide to the air. Extra carbon dioxide traps heat and warms the planet. Using less fuel slows the warming.

The big threats: climate change, loss of living things, pollution. Pollution is harmful material in air, water or soil. Together these three are the triple planetary crisis. Everyone can help. Save energy and water. Reuse, repair and recycle.

Watch out!

A small rise in temperature is not small for Earth. It can melt ice and raise sea levels.

Slide the fuel burned. Watch the extra carbon dioxide.
