Proportional Reasoning-1

Sharing an amount in a ratio

Two cousins win ₹350. They share it in the ratio 3 : 4. How much does each get?

Loading lab…

₹350 split into 3 + 4 = 7 parts.
Step 1 of 3
  1. ₹350 split into 3 + 4 = 7 parts.
  2. Each part is ₹50. Three parts: ₹150.
  3. Four parts: ₹200. Check: 150 + 200 = 350.

The rule

One cousin gets ₹150 and the other gets ₹200.

Count the parts first. 3 : 4 means 3 + 4 = 7 parts. Divide the total by 7 to find one part: 350 ÷ 7 = ₹50. Then multiply one part by each number in the ratio. 3 × 50 = ₹150 and 4 × 50 = ₹200.

A ratio with three numbers works the same way. ₹240 shared 1 : 2 : 5 is 1 + 2 + 5 = 8 parts. One part is 240 ÷ 8 = ₹30. The shares are ₹30, ₹60 and ₹150.
