Tales by Dots and Lines

When joining dots is allowed

Rain for six weeks is drawn as six dots. Votes for four kinds of book are drawn as four dots. Should each set of dots be joined by a line?

Two sets of dots: weeks of rain, kinds of book.
Step 1 of 2
  1. Two sets of dots: weeks of rain, kinds of book.
  2. Weeks join in their real order. Kinds do not.

Ask one question before you join

Join the six weeks of rain. Do not join the four kinds of book.

A line graph plots each reading above its place on a scale. The bottom scale is the row of labels, such as weeks. Then the graph joins each dot to the next dot. Week 3 comes after week 2 in every drawing. So a line that rises between two weeks means the rain rose.

The kinds of book have no such order. Stories, Science, Poetry and Atlases can be put in any order. Each order draws a different shape. In the lab, drag a label to a new place.

Rule: Join dots when the bottom scale has a real order.
