Digital Safety & Citizenship III: What a Machine Hands You

Track quiz

Before the questions, here is each idea in one line.

One line for each idea
IdeaThe line to keep
It sounds sureSounding certain is not evidence. Look for the claim in the notice. It says this, or the opposite, or nothing.
Check before you shareCheck a claim with what you know or a source you trust. The cost of being wrong decides how hard to check.
A list from tapsSuggestions can be built from a tally of what got tapped. Tap one kind much more, and it takes more of the list.
A narrow listA list built from a lopsided tally stays lopsided. More of the top kind does not widen it. Taps on other kinds can.
Say what you didEach part of your work has a record. Sort by the record, not by how the writing sounds. Then say what the record says.

A machine writes "The tank holds five thousand litres." Line 2 of the notice says 5000 litres. What does the notice do?

  • It says this
  • It says nothing, because one line is not enough
  • It says the opposite, because figures and words differ

A machine writes "Three pipes feed the tank." The notice says one pipe feeds it. What does the notice do?

  • It says this, because both mention pipes
  • It says nothing, because it never counts pipes
  • It says the opposite

A machine writes "The water is safe to drink." The notice never mentions drinking. What does the notice do?

  • It says the opposite, because it lists other uses
  • It says nothing
  • It says this, because it does not warn against it

Why is "it says nothing" the verdict most easily missed?

  • It feels too hard to check
  • A clash is hard to spot
  • A reader adds the missing answer without noticing

A machine answer sounds very sure. What does that tell you about whether it is true?

  • Nothing, because sounding sure is not evidence
  • It is probably true
  • It is probably false

A message says the bus will not run on Monday. A source you trust says the same. What does that give you?

  • Nothing, because a message can say anything
  • Good evidence, because it comes from outside the message
  • Proof that the message is old

Many friends shared a message. What does that show?

  • That it is true
  • That a teacher wrote it
  • Nothing about whether it is true, because a mistake can spread

What decides how hard you should check a message?

  • How bad it would be if the message is wrong
  • How many words it has
  • How fast it arrived

A message about a school closing arrives. What is a good step before you pass it on?

  • Pass it on quickly, to help others
  • Check a source you trust, or ask a trusted adult
  • Wait for more friends to share it

Five kinds of video have 2 taps each. Rangoli gets 10 more taps. What happens to rangoli in the list?

  • It takes more of the list, 6 of the 10 places
  • It takes fewer places
  • Nothing changes, because every kind is equal

A tally counts taps. What does it know about the videos?

  • Which ones are best
  • Which ones are safe
  • Only how many taps each kind got

A cousin likes 4 kinds. The list has places for 2. Then 20 more taps go on the top kind. How many liked kinds are in the list?

  • Still 2
  • 3
  • 4

Which change can add other kinds to a narrow list?

  • More taps on the top kind
  • Taps on the other kinds
  • Waiting a week

A machine wrote a part of a page first. I changed it afterwards. What does the record say?

  • The part was mine
  • The machine wrote it
  • The machine helped

A machine wrote a part first. I kept it as it was. Whose part is it?

  • The machine wrote it
  • Mine, because I handed it in
  • Mine and the machine's, equally

Ask three things about what a machine hands you. What claim is in it? What checks it? What is the record?
