Data & Patterns II

Start here

A word you save must be written down somehow. Written down in what?

This track's five ideas, in order.

This is Data & Patterns II. It uses what you know about bits, records and tables.

What you will learn

  • One switch. The smallest thing a machine can write in.
  • More switches. Each new switch doubles the patterns. A pattern is one setting of all the switches.
  • A code. An agreed table gives patterns a meaning.
  • Rows and columns. One record per row, one field per column.
  • Sorting and filtering. Change what you see, not what is there.

Need a quick recap?

  • What is data? — a fact you collect and keep.
  • Kinds of data — numbers, words, pictures, sounds.
  • Storage — keeps what you saved, even with the power off.
  • A named box — a program can hold one value in it.
