Data Visualisation & Analysis

Read the chart before you trust it

Four bars, and no words. What do they count?

Four bars and numbers. You cannot tell what they count.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Four bars and numbers. You cannot tell what they count.
  2. The title names the topic: water used by a school.
  3. Axis labels, along the sides, say what is counted and which weeks.
  4. The unit says how big the numbers are. Week 3 is 4000 litres.

The rule

The bars alone cannot tell you. The title and labels do.

Read the title, the axis labels and units, and the legend first.

Data visualisation means drawing data as a picture, like a chart. Data analysis means studying data to learn what it says.

A legend names each colour or line in a chart. A pattern is something that appears again and again.

A trend is the way values move over time. Ask whether they rise, fall or stay level. A dip is a small fall. Here water use goes up, dips in week 3, then rises.

A conclusion is what you decide from the chart. It must say only what the chart shows. This chart does not say why week 4 used more.

Switch the parts on. Answer the question.
