Methods of Separation in Everyday Life

Separating by size

Flour goes through a kitchen sieve before roti dough is made. The lumps stay in the sieve.

Small and big grains sit mixed above a mesh.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Small and big grains sit mixed above a mesh.
  2. Shake the mesh from side to side.
  3. Small grains fall through the holes.
  4. Big grains stay on top. Size decided everything.

The rule

Handpicking means taking one kind of bit out by hand. Stones come out of dal this way.

Sieving does the same job, faster. A sieve is a sheet with many tiny holes of one size.

Pieces smaller than the holes fall through. Bigger pieces cannot fit through, so they stay on top.

The sieve checks size only. It does not check weight or colour.
