Living Creatures: Exploring their Characteristics

Food and air

A dry moong seed looks still. Is it doing anything?

Loading lab…

A dry moong seed. It looks still.
Step 1 of 4
  1. A dry moong seed. It looks still.
  2. Give it water, warmth and air.
  3. A root and a shoot appear. It has germinated, or started to grow.
  4. Later, the leaves use sunlight to make food.

The rule

The seed does very little, but it is alive.

Every living thing needs food and air, again and again.

  • An animal eats its food.
  • A plant makes its own food, using sunlight.
  • Both need air.

A resting seed is dormant. It is alive, but waiting for water, warmth and air. When a root and shoot appear, the seed has germinated. The shoot is the part that grows up.
