How a Computer Works

Files and folders

Homework, photos and saved games are mixed together on one drive. A drive is where a computer keeps files. Finding last week's notes takes a long time.

Folders fix that.

Files sit mixed up, with no folders.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Files sit mixed up, with no folders.
  2. Make folders: Homework, Pictures, Games.
  3. Move each file into its folder.
  4. Now every file has one clear home.

A file is one saved thing. A folder groups related files.

So you can find last week's notes quickly.

A file could be a story, a photo or a saved game. Every file has a name.

A folder is like a drawer for related files. A folder can hold other folders too.
