Meeting AI: What It Is and What It Isn't

Automatic is not the same as AI

A washing machine runs by itself. Is it AI? Ask one question. Did it learn from examples?

Here is one more machine. A spam filter moves junk email out of your inbox.

A washing machine runs alone. Nobody watches it.
Step 1 of 4
  1. A washing machine runs alone. Nobody watches it.
  2. It never learned. Same steps every wash.
  3. A spam filter also runs alone.
  4. It also learned from old emails. It is AI.

No, a washing machine follows fixed steps and never learned.

Automation follows fixed steps. AI learns from examples.

A traffic light with a set timer is automation. AI can handle a new case, one it has not seen. Running by itself does not make something AI.

Sort each machine. Is it automation or AI?
