Nudging the weights
One missed day can move the rule. A nudge is a small change to the weights. Watch the line move with the rule.
- Gauge 6, days 0: the rule waits, but the caretaker called.
- The nudge: gauge weight 6 + 6 = 12. Days weight 4 + 0 = 4.
- The new line moves. Now the rule calls on this day.
The rule
One learning step moves each weight. It moves by the nudge times its own input. The move goes toward the right answer.
The rule said wait and the caretaker's word was call. The sum was too low, so the weights move up. Each weight moves by its own input. The nudge is the small whole number 1 all through this track. The starter rule gets all eight learned days right. So the only misses are kept-back days. This lesson learns from one of those missed days anyway. A real project would not learn from its kept-back days.
- Gauge input 6, gauge weight 6. The move is 1 × 6 = 6. New weight: 6 + 6 = 12.
- Days input 0, days weight 4. The move is 1 × 0 = 0. New weight: 4 + 0 = 4.
Look at the second bullet. The days input was 0. So the days weight did not move at all. A weight moves only by the nudge times its own input.
The lab below runs this same step. Predict each new weight, including the one that does not move.
