The number line

Text size

House numbers go in order along a street. Each house has its own spot.

The rule

A number line gives every number its own spot. The steps are equal.

On this line, zero is the first spot. A number to the right is bigger. A number to the left is smaller.

Example

The arrow is 3 steps after 10. It points at 13. Count the steps: 11, 12, 13.

Your Class 6 chapter The Other Side of Zero teaches more. The chapter draws the line left of zero too.

Watch out!

Count the steps, not the spots. Do not count the spot you start on. 3 steps after 10 is 13, not 12.
