Show on a big screen

6 min

Text size

Start to draw a bar chart. Which question will it answer?

"How do most come?" 3 groups, 3 bars. Easy to compare.
Step 1 of 3
  1. "How do most come?" 3 groups, 3 bars. Easy to compare.
  2. "Which is longer, Student 3's or Student 7's?" 2 students, 2 bars. Just read the table.
  3. "Which day was it?" 1 group, 1 bar. Nothing to compare.

The rule

Draw a chart when the question compares groups. For one row, read the table.

Bars stand side by side, so you can compare their heights.

You need more than one group. Use a chart when many rows fall into a few groups. One bar for each row is just the table again. Finding one fact in one row is a lookup.

Four questions about the same 12 rows
