Lesson 2 of 8

The same steps for every person

Show on a big screen

6 min

Text size

Twelve students are asked. Three rows come back blank. Why?

The method: ask, wait, write. Same steps for everyone.
Step 1 of 4
  1. The method: ask, wait, write. Same steps for everyone.
  2. Run it once per student. Each run makes one row.
  3. Now skip "wait". Students 3, 7 and 12 think first.
  4. Their rows go blank. One missing step, three holes.

The method skipped "wait". Three students think first, so they gave no answer.

The rule

Use one method, the same way, for every person. A missing step can spoil many rows at once.

A blank row is a missing value. Nobody recorded that answer. The steps stay the same. Only the student changes.

Order matters too

  • Write before you ask? There is no answer to write. All 12 rows stay blank.
  • Ask in your own words? The rows answer different questions.

Watch out!

A guess written in a blank row looks like a real answer. Ask again, or mark the row missing.

Switch a step off. Watch the rows.
