The eleven rules first. Then the quiz.

Tissues in Action — the rule behind each lab
IdeaThe rule
A tissueA tissue is a group of cells working on one job. They are usually similar.
EpithelialEpithelial tissue covers the body and lines the organs inside. Its cells are packed close, and its shape fits its job.
ConnectiveConnective tissue joins and supports other tissues. Its matrix decides how hard or soft it is.
MuscleMuscle tissue moves the body by shortening. Skeletal muscle is voluntary. Smooth and cardiac muscle are involuntary.
NervousNervous tissue is made of neurons. A neuron gets a message at its dendrites. The axon carries it on.
MeristemMeristem is plant tissue whose cells keep dividing. Apical meristem lengthens. Lateral meristem widens. Intercalary meristem lets grass regrow after cutting.
Xylem and phloemXylem carries water and minerals up from the roots. Phloem carries food from the leaves to other parts.
JointsA joint is where bones meet. Muscles pull on bones through tendons. The kind of joint decides which movements are possible.
Plant skinThe epidermis is the outer skin of a plant. Its stomata let gases and water vapour pass.
Supporting tissuesParenchyma has thin walls and stores food. Collenchyma has thick corners and bends. Sclerenchyma has thick lignin walls and is hard.
BloodRed cells carry oxygen. White cells fight germs. Platelets help blood clot. Plasma carries food and hormones.
