Show on a big screenHere are the ten rules, in the words each lab uses.
| Idea | The rule |
|---|---|
| Living and non-living together | Biotic and abiotic parts affect each other. Together they form an ecosystem. |
| One kind, or all kinds | A population is one kind in one place. A community is all the populations there. |
| Where the food starts | Plants and algae make their own food by photosynthesis. They are producers. Animals cannot make food. They are consumers. |
| Along the chain | A food chain shows who eats whom. The arrow points from the food to the eater. |
| Chains join into a web | Many animals eat more than one kind of food. So food chains join up. They form a network called a food web. |
| The crew that puts it back | Decomposers break dead plants and animals into simpler things. The simple things go into the soil. Plants use them again. |
| Pull one link | In a simple chain, when one kind falls, what it eats rises. What eats it falls. |
| People are in the picture | People's changes travel along the same links as any other change. |
| Water, land and farms | Aquatic ecosystems are in water, such as ponds, rivers and lakes. Terrestrial ecosystems are on land, such as forests, grasslands and deserts. Farmland is on land. People made it, so it is human-made. |
| Living together | Mutualism: both partners gain. Commensalism: one gains, and the other is neither helped nor harmed. Parasitism: one lives on or in the other and harms it. |
