Show on a big screen

5 min

Text size

A pond, a forest and a wheat field are all ecosystems. How are they alike? How are they different?

Ecosystems can be in water, on land, or made by people.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Ecosystems can be in water, on land, or made by people.
  2. Aquatic: in water, such as ponds, rivers and lakes.
  3. Terrestrial: on land, such as forests, grasslands and deserts.
  4. Human-made: made by people, such as farmland. It is also on land.

All three are alike: they have living and non-living parts. They differ in place and in who made them.

New words

  • Aquatic — in water.
  • Terrestrial — on land.

The rule

ecosystems are in water, such as ponds, rivers and lakes. ecosystems are on land, such as forests, grasslands and deserts. Farmland is on land. People made it, so it is human-made.

An ecosystem can be large, like a forest. It can be small, like one big neem tree.

Read each place. Pick its kind.
