One answer, many questions

Show on a big screen

5 min

Text size

A friend says, "Wait until it cools." What question did you ask?

An answer: "Wait until it cools."
Step 1 of 4
  1. An answer: "Wait until it cools."
  2. One question it fits: "Can I touch the pan?"
  3. Another: "When can I eat the soup?"
  4. And another: "When can I drink the tea?"

The idea

Many questions can lead to that answer. One is: "Can I touch the pan?"

Science begins with a question. A question asks. An answer replies.

A test can answer one question and raise another. A tap runs slowly. You ask, "Is the tank low?" You check. The tank is full. Now you ask why the tap is slow.

The rule

One answer can fit many questions. Asking a good question is part of science. A tested idea can still raise new questions.

Now try it. Pick an answer. Find every question that fits.
