The idea

Water and food move through two sets of thin tubes.

Xylem is a set of thin tubes. Xylem carries water and minerals up, from the roots to the leaves.

Phloem is another set of thin tubes. It carries food from the leaves to every part of the plant.

Two separate tubes run through the stem.
Step 1 of 3
  1. Two separate tubes run through the stem.
  2. Xylem carries water up.
  3. Phloem carries food up and down.

Most water that a plant takes in goes out as vapour. Vapour is water as a gas. The vapour goes out through the stomata, tiny holes in the leaves.
