Lesson 1 of 7

When a choice is unfair

Show on a big screen

6 min

Text size

A quiz club has four places. Eight students want them. A preference is liking one choice more than another.

Three places where bias can start.

The rule

Bias is an unfair preference for or against someone. An AI can learn it from data, design or its makers.

A choice is fairer when it uses facts that matter. Quiz scores matter for a quiz club. Where a student sits does not.

An AI has no wishes of its own. Unfair results often start in three places. They are its data, its design and what its makers choose. Its design is how it was built.

A program can repeat an unfair pattern. A program can sometimes make the pattern bigger.

Watch out!

Unfair does not always mean planned. Bias can happen by accident.

Try two rules. See who is not picked.
