A pile of numbers tells you little. A good chart can tell you a lot.

This track's seven ideas, in order.

This is Data Visualisation & Analysis. It uses what you know about tables, sorting and bar charts. Your school handbook has a chapter on the same topics. This track covers its main ideas.

What you will learn

  • Two shapes of data. Rows and columns, or no fixed shape.
  • Four ways to collect. Watch, ask, measure, or let a device record.
  • File formats. The file decides what you can do with the data.
  • Clean first. Remove copies, fix errors and fill gaps.
  • Bar, line or pie. Pick the chart that answers the question.
  • Reading a chart. Title, labels, unit and trend, the way values move.
  • Precise or accurate. Precision and accuracy are not the same.

Need a quick recap?

  • A table — rows are records, columns are fields.
  • Sorting and filtering — they change what you see, not what is there.
  • A bar chart — a taller bar means a bigger count.
