You type a story. The power is cut before you press save. Is the story still there?

Loading lab…

No. An unsaved story is gone.

Try it. Save after two lines. Then cut the power.

Your story sits on the desk. That is memory.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Your story sits on the desk. That is memory.
  2. If you press save, a copy goes to the cabinet.
  3. The power cuts. The desk is emptied.
  4. The cabinet copy is still there. You get back what you saved.

Memory forgets at power off. Storage keeps what you saved.

Memory holds what you do right now. Some books call memory RAM. Storage keeps what you saved.

Because memory needs power, it forgets when the power is off.

Save copies your work into storage. The work stays in memory too. That is why you can keep typing.
