Track quiz
Show on a big screenHere are the ten rules from the lessons. Then try the questions.
| Idea | The rule |
|---|---|
| Two kinds of element | Metals are usually shiny, bendable, ringing and good conductors. Non-metals are usually dull, brittle and poor conductors. |
| What an oxide tells | A basic oxide reacts with an acid. An acidic oxide reacts with a base. Metal oxides are usually basic. Some, like aluminium oxide, act both ways. Non-metal oxides are usually acidic. Some, like carbon monoxide, are neutral. |
| With air, water and acid | Metals react with oxygen to give metal oxides. Some metals react with water, and some only with steam. Metals above hydrogen react with dilute acid. They give a salt and hydrogen. |
| Who pushes whom out | A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive one from its salt. |
| The reactivity series | The reactivity series lists metals from most reactive to least reactive. A metal displaces any metal below it from its salt solution. Metals above hydrogen release hydrogen from dilute acids. |
| Compounds that carry charge | A metal gives electrons to a non-metal. Both become charged ions, and opposite charges attract. The result is an ionic compound. Ionic compounds conduct when molten or dissolved, not when solid. |
| Getting a metal out | A metal's place in the series decides how it is extracted. Metals high in the series need electrolysis of the molten ore. Middle metals are reduced with carbon. Metals at the bottom are found free or need only heat. |
| Rust and what stops it | Iron rusts when air and water are both present. Paint, oil and grease keep air and water away. A zinc coat, called galvanising, protects iron even when it is scratched. Mixing iron with other metals, as in stainless steel, resists rust. |
| Mixed on purpose | An alloy mixes a metal with other metals or a non-metal. It is made by melting them together. An alloy can have better properties than the pure metal. |
| Purifying copper | Electrolytic refining makes pure copper from impure copper. The impure copper is the anode. The cathode is a thin strip of pure copper. The solution is copper sulphate with a little acid. |
