Show on a big screen

5 min

Text size

From space, Earth looks blue. Most of its surface is covered with water.

Think of Earth's surface as ten equal parts.
Step 1 of 3
  1. Think of Earth's surface as ten equal parts.
  2. About seven of them are water.
  3. About three are land. Earth looks blue from space.

The rule

The hydrosphere is all of Earth's water. It includes oceans, lakes, rivers, ponds and underground water.

Water covers about 70 per cent of Earth's surface. All the water together is the hydrosphere. Rain and snow refill rivers, lakes and underground water.

Water vapour is water as a gas. The Sun's heat turns some water into vapour. Vapour cools and turns to tiny drops. The drops form clouds.

Nutrients are materials that plants need to grow. A solvent is a liquid that other things dissolve in. Water is a good solvent. So water carries nutrients from soil to the leaves of a plant.

Fill the squares to match Earth. Then follow the water.
