Lesson 3 of 11

Two more kinds of mirror

Show on a big screen

6 min

Text size

A shaving mirror makes your face big. A shop's corner mirror makes it small. Both are curved. A concave mirror curves inwards. A convex mirror curves outwards. Upright means not upside down. Close means near the mirror.

Plane mirror: same size, upright.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Plane mirror: same size, upright.
  2. Concave mirror, close: upright, larger.
  3. Concave mirror, very far: upside down, smaller.
  4. Convex mirror: upright, smaller.

The rule

A shaving mirror is concave. A shop's corner mirror is convex. Each is a spherical mirror, shaped like part of a hollow ball.

A plane mirror gives an upright image of the same size. A convex mirror gives an upright, smaller image. A concave mirror gives an upright, larger image when close. Further away, the image is upside down. First it is still larger, then it gets smaller.

The spoon's inner side is concave. The spoon's outer side is convex.

Look at each image. Name the mirror.
