A steel gate. A brass bell. A wooden bench. Which are metals?

A gate, a bell and a bench. Which are metals?

Your NCERT book calls this chapter The World of Metals and Non-metals.

What you will learn

  • Shine and sound. Most metals bounce light back and ring when struck.
  • Beaten and drawn. A metal spreads flat, or pulls into wire.
  • Heat and the loop. The loop is a path for electric current. Metals carry heat and current well. One non-metal does too.
  • Non-metals around us. Nitrogen and sulfur are non-metals.
  • Rusting. Iron needs air and water together to turn orange.
  • Choosing. The job decides which property, or quality, matters.
  • Oxides. A metal's oxide is usually basic. A non-metal's is usually acidic.
  • Kept away. Sodium is stored in kerosene. White phosphorus is stored in water.
  • Jewellery. Gold and silver shine and shape easily.
  • Non-metal jobs. Breathing, fertilisers, clean water, antiseptics.

Need a quick recap?

  • Which things does a magnet pull? (in Exploring Magnets). Iron and steel say yes.
  • Hard or soft? (in Materials Around Us). A test decides it, not a look.
  • Some things let the loop through (in Electricity). A conductor lets current pass.

Stay safe

Do not heat any metal in real life. Every test here runs on the screen.
