A team scores 45 runs in 10 overs. That is 4.5 runs in each over.

45 sits in the tens and ones columns.
Step 1 of 4
  1. 45 sits in the tens and ones columns.
  2. Share into 10.
  3. Every digit moves one column right.
  4. The digits now read 4.5.

The rule

Dividing by 10, 100 or 1000 moves every digit right. Each digit moves one column for each zero.

A digit one column right is worth one tenth as much.

Seen another way, the point moves left by the same count. Open a new column past the point if a digit needs it.

It is the same move as times ten, in the opposite direction.

250 paise ÷ 100 is ₹2.50. There are 100 paise in a rupee. Two zeros, so each digit moves 2 columns right: 250 becomes 2.50.
