Twelve ideas, twelve checks. Look back at the table if you need it.

Twelve signposts for reading a line somebody else wrote
SignpostHow it goes
Expression and valueThe line is the expression. The number is its value.
Order matters7 + 4 × 3 is 19 or 33, so we agree one order.
TermsCut before each + or −. The sign stays. Add terms.
BracketsFinish what is inside them first.
Tied signsSame level? Do the left one first.
Turning round+ and × swap. − and ÷ usually change the value.
Two counts, one tray6 × (10 + 3) and 6 × 10 + 6 × 3 count the same 78.
Write your ownOne term per item, checked by rounding.
Swap and regroupSwap two terms. The total stays the same. Group the terms a different way. The total stays the same.
Brackets awayA minus before a bracket flips every sign inside. A plus before a bracket changes no sign.
Compare by movesA sum stays equal when one term gains what the other loses. A difference stays equal when both terms move by the same amount.
Near 100Write the number as 100 plus or minus a small gap. Multiply each part by the other number. Then subtract the gap's part, or add it.
