Lesson 3 of 8

Give a pattern a meaning

Show on a big screen

6 min

Text size

Three switches make eight patterns. None of them means anything yet.

Two patterns: down up up, and up up down.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Two patterns: down up up, and up up down.
  2. Look each one up in the table.
  3. Down up up reads: O.
  4. Up up down has no line. Nothing comes out.

A code is an agreed table of pattern and meaning. Both ends hold the same copy. The two ends are the sender and the reader. Each pattern has its own line in the table.

A three-switch code. Six of eight patterns have a letter.
PatternLetter
down down downA
down down upM
down up downN
down up upO
up down downG
up down upT

Two patterns have no line. Send one and nothing comes out.

A code can carry more than letters. A picture is a grid of coloured dots. A table can give each colour a number.

Set the switches. Make the letter.
