Lesson 2 of 9

Growing and moving

Show on a big screen

5 min

Text size

A tulsi plant by a window leans, or bends, toward light. Is that moving?

Loading lab…

Day 0: a short, straight stem.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Day 0: a short, straight stem.
  2. Day 5: taller, leaning a little.
  3. Day 10: taller again, leaning more.
  4. Growing counts. Leaning is moving too.

The rule

Yes, a plant that leans toward light is moving.

Growing means getting bigger over time. It can be slow.

Moving means changing position. It is more than walking.

A living thing grows from within (inside itself), using food. A crystal (like a grain of salt) only adds material from outside.

Example

The touch-me-not plant, or lajwanti, folds shut within seconds of a touch. A plant can move fast too.
