|---|---|
| Past zero | Same size steps carry on. New marks are −1, −2, −3. |
| Reading the line | A dash means left of zero. Zero is neither side. |
| Which is less | Further left is less. |
| Opposites | Same distance from zero, other side. |
| Moving | Add walks right. Take away walks left. |
| Real places | A reading, a level or a score has a chosen zero. |
