Lesson 7 of 10

Angles around us

Show on a big screen

5 min

Text size

A book corner. A pair of scissors. The clock on the wall. Each one has angles.

Loading lab…

One angle drawn small: 100°.
Step 1 of 4
  1. One angle drawn small: 100°.
  2. Another angle drawn big: 80°.
  3. Ring both numbers. Compare only those.
  4. 100° is bigger, even drawn small.

The rule

To find the bigger angle, compare the degree numbers. Do not decide by the size of the drawing. Longer arms do not change the turn.

Scissor blades make an angle too. Open them wider and the number grows.

The hour hand is the short hand. The minute hand is the long hand. In 12 hours the hour hand turns 360°. So in 1 hour it turns 360° ÷ 12 = 30°.

Example

At 3 o'clock the minute hand points at 12. The hour hand points at 3. The hands are 3 numbers apart on the clock. 3 × 30° = 90°. That is a right angle.

At 6 o'clock the hands are 6 numbers apart. 6 × 30° = 180°. That is a straight angle.
