Lesson 7 of 9
The big picture
Show on a big screenA fraction is a number with its own exact place.
| Idea | Remember | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Equal parts | A fraction name needs equal parts. | 3 uneven pieces are not thirds. |
| The two numbers | Bottom: how many equal parts. Top: how many you took. | In 3/8, one part is 1/8. |
| On the line | Cut each step into bottom-number parts. Walk top-number steps. | 7/4 is 1 and 3/4. |
| Many names | Multiply or divide top and bottom by the same number. | 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8. |
| Which is more | Rename to one bottom number. Compare the tops. | 3/4 = 15/20 is more than 3/5 = 12/20. |
| Adding | Tops add or subtract. The piece size stays. | 1/4 + 1/4 = 2/4. |
