Lesson 8 of 9

Text size

Each row is a check you can run with a compass.

What to check, and how
IdeaThe check
Exact, not neatMeasure every side. All the same means it passes.
What a circle isMeasure from the centre to points on the curve. All the same.
Across the middleDoes the line pass through the centre? Then it is the diameter.
Carrying a lengthSet the span on the length itself. Do not read a ruler.
Square cornersMark equal distances on both arms. Measure the gap.
Steps in orderAsk what a step needs. Is it there yet?

A four-sided figure has sides of 40, 40, 40 and 42 mm. Are all its sides equal?

  • Yes, because a ruler was used
  • No, because one side is different
  • You cannot tell from the numbers

What is a circle?

  • Any round shape that closes up
  • Every point the same distance from one centre
  • Any shape drawn with a compass

A circle has a radius of 25 mm. What is its diameter?

  • 12 mm
  • 50 mm
  • 25 mm

A line has both ends on a circle. It misses the centre. Is it a diameter?

  • Yes, because both ends are on the circle
  • No, because a diameter must pass through the centre
  • Yes, every line across a circle is a diameter

Why copy a length with a compass and not a ruler?

  • A compass is faster
  • The span holds the exact length, so nothing is rounded
  • A compass can draw circles too

Marks are 30 mm out on both arms. The gap is 42 mm. What is the corner?

  • Wider than square
  • Square
  • Narrower than square

You want to draw a rectangle. The base is not ruled yet. Can you draw the whole rectangle now?

  • Yes, in any order
  • No, the base has to come first
  • Yes, the compass will draw the base

Chapter 8 is called Playing with Constructions. Read it with your compass on the desk.

Next: Symmetry — fold lines, and shapes that match after a turn.
