Two points give a distance. One formula finds a point between them.

A point P placed at any ratio between two given points.

This is Chapter 7, Coordinate Geometry. You already know how to find a distance. Here you add a formula that finds a point at any ratio.

What this track covers

  • The distance formula. An answer can be a square root.
  • The section formula. One formula for a point at any ratio.
  • The midpoint. The ratio 1 : 1.
  • A missing corner. Then cutting a segment into three parts.
  • Name the shape. Distances show a line, a triangle or a quadrilateral.

Two words to know. The x-coordinate is the abscissa. The y-coordinate is the ordinate.

Quick catch-up

  • The straight-line distance between two points (in Orienting Yourself).
  • The point exactly halfway (in Orienting Yourself).
  • The square root: finding a square's side from its area (Class 8).
